About we are Valley kids

we are Valley kids (Ruby and Wes) grew up in the Valley, but didn’t meet there until after they had been gone for a long time. Their paths finally merged in the summer of 2020, when both had returned home to Los Angeles and were deep into self-producing their debut solo albums in quarantine. After months of exchanging voice memo recordings and long phone calls into the early mornings, they met in person. The connection between the two was obvious and instantaneous, as was the desire to start a band. Thus, we are Valley kids was born.

During their first 6 months together, we are Valley kids spent their time writing, rehearsing, and recording in a vacated church basement and a back cottage in the San Fernando Valley and on February 28, 2021, they released their first single “ego immolation,” a celestial ballad of self-transformation that blends the duo’s impeccable harmonies and soothing acoustic guitar picking. In an apparent cosmic response, only days after the release had been scheduled they were given an opportunity to rebuild a recording studio in the LA Arts District that had closed during the pandemic, and by March of 2021 they were well on their way to creating the home of their dreams.

The new studio became the headquarters of M.A.D. Witch Farms, an artist-owned recording studio co-operative for independent artists, and the expansion of space paralleled an expansion of the we are Valley kids’ sound. Over the next year and a half, Ruby and Wes began incorporating the energy of a funk jam band into their acoustic folk-blues sound and the combination was infectious. Melodic earworm hook guitar parts, driving rhythms, danceable bass lines, and multi-part harmonies created a foundational sound that developed into two more single releases, “4-3-6-1 go” (November 29, 2021) and “10,000 Years” (April 18, 2022), and a full-length album, “we are Valley kids” (August 18, 2022).

The chemistry in their recordings and onstage performances is undeniably sweet, and their shows take audiences on a joyful ride through examined experiences of personal transformation, cosmic love, and the beauty of being alive. Born storytellers and performers, we are Valley kids create such a vulnerable realness and tenderness within their music that you can't help but hum along.
